School Band Network's roster field schema already defines a Chair field: free text, up to 16 characters, that a director can set on a student's roster entry, the same kind of field as Instrument or Grade. What does not exist anywhere in the platform is a chair-ranking system, an audition-scoring tool, or an engine that reads that field to place, rank, or seat a student. This page states that distinction plainly, and stops there.
What the roster schema actually defines
One free-text field, up to 16 characters. Nothing reads it yet.
In a band section, "chair" is the ordinary term for a player's seat within that section: first chair, second chair, and so on. The band program's roster field schema defines a Chair field for exactly that: a free-text value, not required, capped at 16 characters, that a director can set on a student's roster entry.
That is the whole fact. The field definition is marked, in its own source, as carrying no downstream consumer: unlike the roster's Section and Section Color fields, which are wired into the section-as-roster adapter and an automatic color tiebreak, the Chair field is not read by any ranking, scoring, or placement mechanic today. It is a place to record a value, not an engine that computes one.

Program data only -- never a public roster
A chair value, if a director ever sets one, is staff-facing roster data. It is never a public listing.
Band students are minors. A chair value on a student's roster entry -- like every other roster field -- is never a public page, never a ranked public list, and never compared across students on any page a visitor could browse. It sits behind the same roster record the rest of the platform reads from, visible only to staff with the right role and to that student's own consented guardian.
A family reaches its own student's information only through the platform's consent substrate -- the single-school wall and the do-not-publish kill-switch that back the whole platform -- not a public roster or ranking page. No other family sees another family's student. This page names no real student, no real chair assignment, and no real program.
